A mattress topper is an additional comfort layer which is placed on top of a mattress to improve longevity, hygiene, or simply turn an uncomfortable night’s sleep into a bearable one.
It is an additional comfort layer which provides extra support (for you) and extra protection (for your mattress). Mattress toppers protect the lifespan of your mattress by reducing pressure on the springs and delaying general wear and tear. They can vary in thickness and materials and are generally available in all sizes from your child’s bunk bed to the master bedrooms super king bed!
There are endless types of mattress toppers online and in retailers across the country, with each claiming to offer the best mattress topper for your mattress. In this section we take a look at the various types of mattress topper and the pros and cons of each.
Pros:
A memory foam mattress topper will soften a mattress that is too firm, by adding a foam comfort layer to the top of your mattress. Memory foam also helps to absorb the motions of your partner moving in the night, helping you both get a great night’s sleep.
Cons:
Memory foam toppers are usually the most expensive and some find them too hot to lie in as they are made from temperature sensitive material.
Pricing:
If you are searching for the ultimate comfort and support from your mattress topper, a memory foam topper is an excellent choice. The luxurious DFI Memory foam toppers are priced from €99- €199 and add a deep comfort layer to help extend the lifespan of your mattress.
Based on the combination of price point and comfort/support level memory foam is possibly the best mattress topper option for most people.
The most durable of mattress toppers as it is made from either rubber tree sap or synthetic rubber. Latex toppers also absorb movements from your partner in the night and are antimicrobial
Some people may find them a little too firm and they are also the most expensive type of topper on the market.
As with a Memory Foam topper, Latex mattress toppers are an excellent choice for those seeking the ultimate in comfort and support. Coming in at the higher end of the price scale, Latex Toppers retail at €200- €500 depending on the blend of latex and depth.
Arguably the best mattress topper type, latex toppers add a deep comfort layer to help extend the lifespan of your mattress and although they retail on the more expensive side of the scale, they are absolutely worth the investment as you can’t put a price on a great nights sleep!
Synthetic material based mattress toppers are often the cheapest on the market, but with a shorter life span. However, they will still enhance the comfort in your mattress with their additional layers.
With the shortest lifespan, polyester mattress toppers can sag quicker than others, meaning you may need to turn it more often or replace it much quicker.
If you want a topper to primarily protect your mattress, a polyester based topper will certainly be suitable and it usually retails around €30 - €60 in a king size. Polyester/microfiber is the best mattress topper for those on a tight budget.
Natural fillings such as feather and down are extremely soft meaning they offer a soft and luxurious feel. Their natural fillings also help to regulate your body temperature while you sleep.
May not offer as much support as other mattress toppers due to its natural soft fillings.
If you wish to soften the top layer of your mattress then opting for a feather and down based topper is a great choice as they keep their shape for much longer than polyester toppers, which tend to flatten quickly. They usually retail from €100 - €150 in king size and are most probably the best mattress topper type for those who like a deep, soft sleeping surface.
We recommend opting for a mattress topper on one sided mattresses as they contain all their comfort layers and support on one side. Over time, natural settlement can occur from body impressions whilst you sleep, therefore opting for a mattress topper can help regulate these impressions and improve the longevity of your mattress. However, if you have a two-sided mattress, mattress toppers make a great addition with an additional layer of comfort and luxury for the perfect night’s sleep!
Although a mattress topper can improve the longevity of your mattress and ultimately offer an improved night’s sleep, they’re essentially just a topper, and your comfort will still rely on the mattress below. If you regularly use a mattress topper, it will relief pressure from any out of place springs below in the short term, but opting for a topper as a replacement it’s still not recommended in the long run.
The main areas of benefit provided by a mattress topper is in the comfort it offers you and the protection that it offers your mattress. Below we take a look at 4 of the primary benefits of using a mattress topper.
1. Mattress toppers provide additional comfort layers
If you sleep on a one sided mattress, it won’t be long before natural settlement will occur from your body impressions while you sleep. Although a one sided mattress can be rotated, over time the soft components on the top layer of the mattress will begin to form natural impressions. Adding an additional layer in a mattress topper will ensure you still get the most comfort from your new mattress that will last as the topper can be rotated and turned. 2. Improves the longevity of your mattress
As we have previously discussed, an additional layer with a mattress topper will protect your mattress from sagging, natural settlement and overall protect the hygiene of your mattress. A topper will help relieve some pressure from your springs in the mattress, therefore protecting their durability for much longer. With regular rotation and turning, as well as a mattress topper, you will improve the lifespan of your mattress.
3. Mattress toppers help keep your mattress fresh and clean!
Mattress toppers protect your mattress from common bacteria entering such as dust, and dead skin. Without a topper, this bacteria will inevitably end up in the closest layers to the body such as bed sheets and the core of your mattress. A mattress topper also stops sweat and perspiration which we naturally release each night from reaching your mattress. Although it will be absorbed into your topper, they are far cheaper and easier to remove, wash or replace than the entire mattress.
4. They can save you money!
DFI recommend that you change your mattress every 6-9 years. However, adding a mattress topper will improve the longevity of your mattress, therefore adding a few extra years onto its lifespan. Toppers can also protect the warranty of your mattress and in comparison to purchasing a new mattress, a topper is a small expenditure to replace as necessary as needed. In the long run, the small cost will allow your mattress to stay newer for longer and provide you with the same brand new mattress feeling!
